Testimonial: Another Client's Story...

What was your life like before EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) treatment?

I was very stressed and anxious and it felt like the past and the present were the same. I was also very depressed, my nervous system was in a functional freeze, my skills had regressed, as well as OCD spirals and agoraphobia. I wasn’t working, eating, or showering either.

What have you learned about yourself through this process?

I’ve learned I am emotionally more resilient than I thought. And I know more how to self soothe. My instincts are not always wrong and I’m learning that I do my best to keep myself safe.

What have you gained from processing your distressing events via EMDR treatment?

More of a separation of memories from the past and present. More open to new experiences. More of a sense of safety. The after effects on my nervous system are mind blowing. I don’t have to do anything during the week and I see improvements all the time. I started taking care of myself and my environment more. I can tap into emotions that I couldn’t access before, like generosity. I’ve always felt other’s distress as my own, but now I can feel the separation of my wellbeing from theirs.

How is your life different now since starting ERP treatment?

I leave my house more. I process and communicate my feelings better. I’m able to work more. I’m in less physical pain daily, I can breathe more deeply and feel more calm. I also noticed that I’m starting to have better memory of faces and names. I go out with my friends more, and feel less anxiety about the lead up. So many things don’t play on a loop in my head anymore, so I feel like I have more room to be proactive.

How was the outcome different from what you expected? What was positive or challenging about the process?

In the sessions it's very emotionally straining, but it’s worth it. I didn’t know what to expect from this therapy, but I feel so much lighter, and less burdened by the memories after it's processed. The challenging part is re-experiencing these moments, but you have Becky there to keep a careful eye and you still know that you are in your chair in your room. The experience feels like a mix of hypnosis, meditation, and lucid dreaming. And then the process feels like scraping off scabs, it stings and then you wash and re-bandage it and the wound can finally heal properly.

Describe your experience working with your EMDR therapist, Becky.

Becky is kind, calm, and compassionate. She makes you feel like she’s there with you even though the session is online, but gives you space at all the right times. I feel very supported by her in and outside of the session, because I know she thoughtfully plans the process. Working with her has made me feel like I have a safety net, and I can relax, and not vigilantly analyze every moment. She lets you learn how to fish for yourself, while still holding the structure of the net. It’s the perfect combo for my neurodivergence, and I’m extremely grateful that I get to work with her!
