Telehealth Appointments

Telehealth therapy sessions, also known as online or virtual therapy, offer several advantages that make therapy more accessible and convenient for many people. You can attend therapy from the comfort of your home, office, or any private space, eliminating the need for travel. This is especially helpful for people with busy schedules.

Telehealth allows you to work with a therapist who may be located outside your immediate area, expanding your options, especially if you live in a region with limited mental health providers. If you have a specific issue, like trauma or anxiety, telehealth gives you access to therapists with specialized expertise, even if they aren’t available locally. Previous to the pandemic, I woul dnever have thought I would be primarily a telehelath therapy provider, however, my specialties of ERP and EMDR, lend themselves to be more effective in a virtual setting as I can navigate the many factors of providing quality care with resources at our fingertips. Exposures can be conducted in real time also known as "In Vivo" and EMDR has several ways to provide the modality that virtual work often proves more efficient.

Many people feel more relaxed and open when they can attend sessions from a familiar environment, which can lead to more effective therapy. Telehealth offers privacy, as you don’t have to visit a clinic or office, which might make some people uncomfortable. This reduces the stigma sometimes associated with seeking therapy.

You save time by not having to drive to and from appointments, which also reduces travel costs such as gas or public transportation fees. Virtual sessions eliminate concerns about parking or finding the office, making it a smoother experience.

Individuals with mobility issues or chronic illness can access therapy more easily without the physical challenges of traveling to an office. For people with anxiety, agoraphobia, or other mental health conditions that make leaving home difficult, telehealth can provide access to care in a less stressful way.

You can start your session on time without the need to wait in a lobby, making the process more efficient. You can attend a session during your lunch break or between other commitments without needing to allocate extra time for commuting.

Some people may find it easier to open up when they’re in their own space rather than a therapist’s office, which can lead to more productive sessions. If you’re uncomfortable with face-to-face interaction or social settings, virtual therapy can provide a less intimidating experience.

Telehealth reduces the risk of exposure to illnesses like COVID-19, flu, or other infectious diseases by allowing people to stay home. Even during severe weather events or other emergencies, telehealth ensures uninterrupted access to mental health support.

Telehealth talk therapy sessions combine the flexibility and convenience of technology with the personal support of a therapist, making it a great option for many people seeking mental health care.

How telehealth therapy sessions work

Telehealth therapy sessions are a convenient way to engage in therapy from your home or any private space using video or phone. Here’s a simple breakdown of how telehealth sessions work:

1. Scheduling a Session

You’ll schedule your telehealth session just like an in-person session, either online, via email, or by phone.

2. Preparing for the Session

Technology: All you need is a device with a camera and microphone, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer, and a stable internet connection. EMDR and ERP often requires two devices be available (one for your session with me and one for the workspace. You will need consistent, strong internet connection or I may recommend in person sessions. At this time, in person sessions are only provided to Intensive EMDR clients at my Arizona location.

Privacy: It’s important to find a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted or overheard during the session. Babies and pets are not just adorable; but they distractt both the client and therapist. We want to create a safe where you are piroitizing and focusing on YOU. This ensures you feel comfortable and can focus on the conversation.

Location: In a safe, private space, alone; preferably at home. This may go without saying but you will need to be stationary (not driving) and physically in a state I am licensed; being Arizona or California.

Platform: I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform to ensure your privacy and confidentiality. Before the session, you’ll receive a link to join the virtual meeting room. If we’re a doing consult, I’ll call you at the scheduled time.

3. Starting the Session

At the scheduled time, click the link (or answer the call) to start your session. The video platform is Zoom and designed to protect your confidentiality. We’ll begin the session as we would in person, discussing your concerns, goals, and progress.

4. During the Session

Sessions are typically 50 minutes long, and they work the same way as in-person therapy. We’ll discuss your thoughts, feelings, and any issues you’re facing, and I’ll provide guidance, coping strategies, and tools to help you work through your concerns. If you experience any technical issues (like a dropped connection), we’ll reconnect and continue the session. Again, this is why having the app downloaded prior and two devices handy is helpful.

5. After the Session

After the session, you can reflect on the conversation just as you would with in-person therapy. I may give you exercises or tools to practice between sessions, which we’ll follow up on during the next meeting. It is helpful to bring a tablet or journal to your session. I can provide a reflection worksheet if that is helpful.

6. Payment and Insurance

Payments for telehealth sessions are processed after the session. A debit or credit card is kept on file for each client for this purpose. Late cancellations (within 48 hours) or no shows are billed immediately also. We’ll discuss payment details when you schedule the session.

7. Flexibility and Accessibility

Telehealth offers the therapy in the comfort of your home and is a great option for people with busy schedules or mobility issues.

It’s important to know that, for telehealth therapy sessions, you need to be physically located in the state where I am licensed at the time of the session, either in California or Arizona. Most U.S. states require therapists to be licensed in the state where the client is receiving services, which is interpreted as the client's physical location during the therapy session.

Telehealth therapy is an effective and convenient way to receive support without the hassle of commuting, while still maintaining a high level of personal connection and care.
