Testimonial: A Client's Story...

What was your life like before EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) treatment?

Before EMDR, I really struggled to come to terms with many hurts and hangups from my past. I always searched for a reason why I “felt” a particular way. The way I viewed myself was so negative and shameful.

What have you learned about yourself through this process?

I’ve learned that I’m not bound by thoughts or actions; they don’t define my character or who I am. When I dug deep into the process, I actually realized that I’m an awesome person. For 30 plus years I told myself that I was a loser, jerk, or mess-up. The 180-degree turnaround is priceless.

What have you gained from processing of your distressing events via EMDR treatment?

A previous suicide attempt? I am not my past! Meaning, the incident and circumstances revolving around it, do NOT define my present nor future. When I came to this revelation, it was like God shone His warm light on my distressed face.

Divorce? Regarding my first marriage, EMDR helped release my belief that I was not capable of a successful relationship. It almost felt as though I had this rain cloud over my head when I thought about the kind of partner I could/would be after the divorce. The way that EMDR healed that “forecast” has brought tremendous blessing into my marriage with my partner. It’s truly benefited our relationships in terms of trust and self-worth, especially on my behalf.

And chronic pain? Regarding the chronic pain that I experience, EMDR has helped differently than I thought it would. Obviously, it’s not going to “cure” chronic pain, so I had to adjust my expectations toward more of an emotional/psychological realm. The treatment, which I still use daily, assists my ability to reset when going through flareups of pain. Moreover, the negative beliefs about who I am are eliminated and the truth that the pain is external fills my mind. This results in an open hand view of my pain where I am not assigning a moral rating. In other words, I AM NOT MY PAIN!

How is your life different now since completing EMDR treatment?

I am able to process emotions more effectively and in a healthier way. I find that the dislike I had for myself throughout the years is considerably less. It’s as if I’ve lost a 50 lb. backpack that I was carrying around each day. The burden is so much lighter.

How was the outcome different from what you expected?

I had tried EMDR once or twice before, and for some reason the treatment didn’t “stick.” I think I held on to the reins too tight. I explained this to Becky and she was very understanding as she reassured me that we would go at my own pace with no pressure. Me just not analyzing the process and relinquishing the tendency that I have to understand things completely greatly helped. My letting go of the reins, led to such unexpected and amazing results, which many times left me speechless at the end of sessions, which is quite rare.

What was positive or challenging about the process?

The most challenging part was allowing my mind to receive the treatment all while not understanding how the treatment works completely. Basically, I needed to put forth a bit of faith in Becky, the treatment, and ultimately myself.

Describe your experience working with your EMDR therapist, Becky. Was this experience different in ways compared to other EMDR experiences or providers?

As I mentioned earlier, Becky was amazing at allowing me and reassuring me to work at my own pace. I never felt pressured to have the “right” responses. For someone who has struggled with OCD in the past, that absence of pressure and judgment was priceless. The main point I want to emphasize is that Becky’s approach, not only to EMDR, but also to treatment overall, demonstrates caring. If you’re seeking a therapist who cares for you, look no further!
